A bush fire spread to a neighbors land behind a house on Castle Garden Road in Friendship on Sunday around 4 p.m., then spread to the Interstate 86 eastbound lane.
Firefighters already had a busy afternoon as Belmont, Scio and Friendship were toned out a 3:30 p.m. for the report of a barn fire on Ingraham Road. It turned out to be a silo fire and was out. However, Friendship’s response was then diverted to the brush fire.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and were able to stop the fire from spreading to the home. A truck then came up the exit ramp of Interstate 86 and safely parked on the ramp as they pulled hose from the truck and stopped the fire from spreading.
The fire initially was spreading into the trees and the interstate. the wind took the fire east along the interstate, but as the wind shifted, the flames started back toward the expressway.
That’s when the firefighters were able to stop the spread.

At one point during the initial response, the smoke was so thick, vehicles had to slow to a roll to get through the fog.

Firefighters had it in control by 5 p.m. but areas are still smoldering. There did not appear to be injuries at the scene.
