Vehicle Accident Causes Widespread Power Outage in the Village of Wellsville

Planned Maintenance Outage For Sunday 5/16 Has Been Cancelled

A vehicle crashed into a main line pole this morning and has the entire village of Wellsville “in the dark.” The pole was located at the main intersection of Rt. 19 and Rt. 417/Bolivar. Megan Freeman, who lives nearby, snapped this picture after her daughter, Hazel Freeman, announced to the house that she “just watched a giant pole fall over!”

By pure happenstance, the village was planning on a controlled power outage tomorrow, 5/16, in order to upgrade the system. That planned outage has been cancelled in lieu of this unexpected emergency outage.

Emergency Management boss Chris Martelle was in Tops Friendly Market talking with store management on when power could be restored. Customers were in the store but the entire frozen section was barricaded by shopping carts. Village crews were working as fast as possible to install generators at each intersection in order to restore traffic lights. Most stores and restaurants have a “closed due to outage” sign on the front door.

The Wellsville Village Police made the following statement :

“The electric will be out in a part of the village for an extended period due to a car accident. Please be patient & treat any intersections where traffic lights are out as a 4-way stop. This outage may be lengthy as the electric department makes repairs.”
