Papermaking, Bookmaking, Calligraphy, and Printmaking classes, adults only, BYOB

From Kristin Buchholz, Heron Hill Yoga & Art,

These workshops are special to me, not just because fewer and fewer people learn these techniques, but also because they harken back to my college days at Syracuse University’s School of Visual & Performing Arts.

Papermaking: In this workshop we will be using shredded bills, shopping lists and scrap papers to create a new, recycled paper to reuse in collage, bookmaking, calligraphy and other forms of art. Bring something to shred and add to our paper pulp! You will learn the process and make many sheets of your own handmade paper with which to create!

Bookmaking: In this session, we will start by making small, non-adhesive, cut and fold books that utilize some simple sewing techniques. These book forms invite all kinds of creative uses such as painting, poetry, journaling, calligraphy, collage and many other uses. We will also work to create our own blank journal using a variety of materials such as leather, handmade and found papers, as well as PVA adhesive. This workshop requires cutting, folding, sewing and pressing, plus a bit of patience, which is well worth it in the end!

Calligraphy: The art of calligraphy is not the same as handwriting but is much closer to drawing or painting as a creative process. We will learn the basic strokes used in calligraphy, practice drawing with a quality ink pen that’s recommended for this craft, and produce some stunning visual samples you can keep or give as gifts. In this workshop, you’ll learn all you need to continue practicing the calming art of calligraphy.

Printmaking: In this workshop, we will play with color and texture to create monoprints (original prints) then move into the process of linocut or relief printing where we create multiples. Using easy-cut / eraser-like blocks, we will use carving tools to remove material around our design creating a stamp that we will use to print on a variety of papers, including our monoprints. You will leave with the knowledge and ability to continue making your own prints at home as well as with some original prints you created yourself! Just bring an idea for an image (sketched or printed) and enjoy the process!
