Bonnies fever, the “Wiser Jinx,” wieners clarified, a Paypal warning, and more wrandom wrants
By Chuck Wiser, I write the words to share what my eyes see and my heart feels
Recent “sports talk,” talks about “Goats” all the time. This is a biased opinion but in some ways I believe that distinctive title, affixed by some is a little pre-mature. Only history will show and affix that title.
GOAT, or “Greatest Of All Time” designations have to be earned. Buffalo’s Josh Allen has some catching up to do if he plans to surpass the Buffalo Bills “Jim Kelly” and many others. But, he is on his way.
My visible goats can be seen every day. They don’t seem very active, other than munching grass (or weeds) next the Buckley Storage Barns, adjacent to the now “storied” County Route 31 on this end of that route, otherwise known as Middaugh Hill Road, in honor of the former, now deceased, Vince Middaugh. My wife’s uncle Harley Hills used to tell stories about the former “Vince,” most likely from the 40’s and 50’s or maybe earlier. I now know Cheryl Middaugh a “stand out” waitress (and our best friend) at the Texas Hot in Wellsville. Cheryl, whom I’v mentioned before, is never short of a beaming smile or a “Hi, How are ya?”
I’m not sure how much added detail I can share with you regarding my problems, and challenges of shopping, in particular, QVC Shopping, popular on a couple of TV sources. Those very popular sites are great! They offer, and provide, a wealth of shopping experiences to “stay at home” shoppers, as my wife now is. The prices are high compared to what you can find locally, and even at the other non-TV Shopping lure stations, but it IS convenient for elderly, shop from home customers that just cannot get to, or have access to, the semi-local “J. C. Penney’s”, or even just home drug stores or other amenity stores.
The downside is opening yourself up to potential “Identity Theft.” As happened with/to us, and, putting your name and account information out there for all kinds of intrusions.
You doubt that? If you go to any site on TV and do a purchase of, or even respond to an ad, or do a search for something…nearly immediately you start receiving ads of, or related to what you were looking for. They may not have stolen your identity…”Yet!” but the threat, and potential for that is monumental.
The danger really heightens when you provide the 3 digit “Security Code” on the back of your card. It cannot be avoided, nor ignored if you want to make any online purchase. I’ve tried to do a “work around” to pay by a personal check, or even a purchase in other ways, but nothing works.
DO NOT USE PayPal! If, you do, as I did…”Buyer Beware.” It was through a “coalition of a QVC purchase mitigated by payment via PayPal that has my accounts all “screwed up.” I have cancelled debit/credit cards, opened new accounts and still continue to have problems, more, “now-so” along the lines of…Your account, or card has been blocked.
Bear in mind, these are “hi-light” capsules of the happenings without full detail (for self protection in some cases). Why do I “lament” on here? To give fair warning to those yet lucky enough to have avoided these problems, and to warn you/them of the outcomes. Am I alone with these problems? Not at all! Any time I leak a part of this story publicly via Facebook, I get numerous (many times over) replies of “Me Too.”
If you just heard or felt that strong gust of wind swooshing through it was just a huge sigh of relief emanating from the Wiser house. Just prior to beginning this paragraph my wife came into my “Writing Wroom” and announced that dinner (supper) was ready. In my haste to save another copy of this Wrambling to a USB plug, I must have clicked on the wrong “something”, or some thing, and my file disappeared. I franticly searched my hard drive, my “One Drive”, and my other USB port drive but could not find a backup copy anywhere. I then went in search for the “draft” copy, that I presumed existed, and couldn’t find or figure out where the MS Draft copies were hidden. Having been through this before I feverishly (whilst supper cooled) looked about at the various files. Normally “Autosave” is turned on but for some reason it wasn’t, or I couldn’t find it.
On the verge of starting anew I finally clicked “somewhere, I know not where, as it was random, and my file came back up on the screen.
You, as well, can breathe easily (he said sarcastically) as I just may complete this Wrambling in time to get it published tonight.
I’m not sure what is up with the mail delivery schedule in Scio. I may have mentioned this previously as well, but this “mornings” paper didn’t get here till after 5 PM tonight. The other night it was after 4 PM, so I hope this isn’t a sign that it’s getting worse. I got a partial explanation a few weeks ago, but I still hope it isn’t getting worse. I’m not exactly sure where the problem, or blame resides. Is there a shortage of delivery personnel? If so, why? Government intervention? That wouldn’t surprise me as they are F’ing (fouling) everything else up these days. I’m sure there are enough able bodied “out of work” people that are capable of passing the exam and security clearances necessary to be a carrier. I used to enjoy getting the paper at around 9 AM and that would give me the opportunity to read it the next day with my 6 AM morning coffee. I used to be an evening paper reader but that kind of morphed to next day morning when early evening things took precedence.
Pictured above is the modern “Bonnies” mascot, the St. Bonaventure “Wolf.”
The St. Bonaventure Bonnies have finished their “pre-season,” and aren’t starting league play out with a bang, unless you consider their quality of play hitting the floor as a “bang.” I’m not exactly sure what is the cause or problem, but their once daunted defense is sluggish at best, especially in the early stages of a game. Sometimes they are able to toughen up and pull out a win but that seems to be too much of a challenge over the past few games. I absolutely despise the “Transfer Portal” as it allows for stealing of players from each other’s rosters prior to the start of the next season. You can’t blame the players for trying to get 4.5 million a year instead of 4 million a year, but I just don’t think that’s right. If you commit to a team and agree to a payment sum, not too shabby with the agents doing their due process, and signing a contract, that should be enough.
The early history of the St. Bonaventure sports programs and athletes had the mascot as a head-dressed Native American and were known as the Brown Indians. They carried this moniker for decades, and actually did it as a proud gesture of faith toward the earliest settlers of the land. Modern “Social Correctness” got involved several years ago so St. Bonaventure adopted the changed team’s name as the “Wolf Pack.” Here is their human “Wolf” who meanders around the game venue throughout the game giving “High Fives,” especially to children, and they seem to adore the “Wolf.”
Can you imagine if schoolteachers or other “hourly workers” were able to do that? I do know that there was some local industry talent robbing from one company to another, with personally known occurrences of that, but there usually was a “gentleman’s agreement” not to steal workers from each other within a community. I hope that some kind of alternative could or can be developed to avoid this upheaval in sports. Sign a contract for “X” number of years and abide by it.
Having mentioned the Bonnies above, I want to give Ticket Manager Kathy Parmenter another shout out. I ended up with a game night free, that I hadn’t expected, and she was able to set me up with a great ticket with an “aisle seat just behind the protective level railing” to accommodate my aging knees, and back, so as to enjoy last nights game, and others in the future, with a maximum of comfort. When I go for the next game (or before) I will set up a series in what they call a “Flex Pack.” For a very reasonable “per game” price you can select from a menu of games between now and the end of the regular season. Go Bonnies!
Alas! The “Wiser Jinx” has struck again 😒. If you are aware or somehow forgot, the Wiser Jinx kicks in; When I find a TV show I like, they discontinue it; When I find a food that I like, they no longer sell it; and on and on. The latest is the loss of the Hillshire Farms Cocktail Weiners. These are the small weiners that are perfect for “snacks,” in my case after having simmered for several hours, days or weeks in my famous “cocktail wieners sauce.” This is a tomato based fairly heavy sauce with my own concoction of ingredients including many liquid flavoring juices like Worcestershire Sauce, Lemon Juice, A splash of bitters…and more. I cook, then continually reheat them in a crock pot and then for our home use leave it turned on all day so that I can “piece on it.” Normally the flavoring holds true for a couple of weeks until the wieners pick up a strong, somewhat “burnt” tasting, flavor. This year, for some reason, the sauce and thus the flavor has maintained a top level quality for much longer, and I’ve added a second batch of wieners and Cheddar Worst wieners to the sauce. I wondered…which is correct wieners vs weiners, and thus…
“Both Wieners (with “ie”) and weiners (with “ei”) are used, but Wieners is the technically correct spelling derived from Vienna (Wien), meaning “Viennese,” while weiner is a common, often intentional, misspelling that’s become standard for hot dogs in the U.S”
Not to be out done with, or by, the “meat product” snacks, the seafoods find their way onto my pallet with my Wiser Special Shrimp Dip.
This gourmet treasure features a special blend of tomato based cocktail sauce, completely different than that used for the wieners. I have no secrets so will share that Miller’s Horseradish sauce is the real flavor inducer for this snack.
When I open my own “snack shack” you will be the first invited. On that flavorful thought I’ve made myself hungry so will wrap this up for this week with the hope that you are enjoying the start of the new year and with my blessing for many more days, and with the enjoyment of Wreading many more Wiser’s Wramblings.
If you have any questions, comments, cares or concerns please feel free to reach out to me as so many have already done. I’ve told a couple that I would give them a special mention and they have not been forgotten.
