Monday Roundup: In gigantic Class D clash, Ark-Can’s Preston nets heroic game-ender to break scoreless tie, outlast Fillmore with 1-0 OT win; Lady Eagles edge out Ark-Can behind late PK by Ross

ARKPORT — It was as tight of a battle you could imagine between two Class D stalwarts across less-than-ideal conditions for well over 80 minutes on Monday.

Although the Wolves of Arkport-Canaseraga came out swinging for the fences immediately in the first half, the Fillmore defense against them withstood the test of time, led by an absolutely dynamic night in between the posts from Brayden Hennard.

Because of it, absolutely no scoring would come across 80 hard-fought minutes of regulation.

It would set up overtime for the two foes, but upon the beginning of the extra session, it would not take long for Arkport-Canaseraga to resume cracking the Eagles code on defense.

Kohler Preston served as the codebreaker, as the Wolves ended the game just over two minutes into the first overtime period with their 18th and final shot of the night against the Eagles defense, reshaping a scoreless game-long deadlock and turning it into an absolutely massive 1-0 shutout of the defending Class D champions at the Melody J. Harwood Soccer Complex in Arkport, Monday night.

“They came out firing on all cylinders and won a lot of 50-50 balls in the center of the field. In spite of a sluggish effort to start on our behalf, Hennard and the defense were able to keep the ball out of the net through the first 40,” said Eagles coach Jarrett Vosburg. “I was much happier with our response in the second half, but we couldn’t find a way to punch one through. A series of defensive lapses coupled with a great effort by Arkport-Canaseraga down the left side led to their goal. Credit to them for playing a physical, gritty game and getting the job done.”

Preston’s goal came on a blazing trail of glory down the sidelines and into the Fillmore zone, where he left no doubt on the pitch to score the Wolves the win just 2:24 into the extra session. The lone strike was paid in part of a heavy 18-shot output against the Eagles (3-1-2), as they claimed the 18-4 overall advantage in that department.

Despite their shots being limited against the Wolves, Fillmore continued to mount the pressure to formulate chances any way they could, especially in the second half.

But nothing became available for the Eagles to put away, as they continued to ride the back of their defense, supercharged by Brayden Hennard in between the posts, who provided an incredible performance consisting of 17 glorious saves.

For the Wolves, the shutout win belonged to Taylor Pragle, as he made stops to all four shots he faced in goal.

Fillmore will look to regroup and retool for their next battle in quick turnaround fashion, hosting Bolivar-Richburg in a 7 p.m. contest back home tonight.

Campbell-Savona 2, Wellsville 1

CAMPBELL — It was a tight, close quarters battle during Campbell-Savona’s Senior Night celebration with the Lions of Wellsville in town, Monday night. But it was one the host Panthers managed to send their seniors leaders out in style under the lights, as they edged their way towards a 2-1 victory.

Information was not provided to Wellsville Sports after the game.

Wellsville (2-1-4) will turn right around and return to action tonight in Belmont, as they hit the road for a 7 p.m. visitation with Genesee Valley/Belfast.

GIRLS SOCCER

Addison 3, Wellsville 1

ADDISON — The first half bar was set by the Addison Lady Knights after the utilization of the game’s opening strike in the first 10 minutes of play, along with a clutch penalty kick down the homestretch. The Lady Lions of Wellsville were able to cut the deficit right in half before the break, but the hosts in maroon were able to hang on through it all, as they successfully fended off their opposition with a 3-1 win on Monday.

Addison kicked off the festivities on the brightest of sparks nearly 10 minutes removed from the kick at midfield, as they broke the ice at the 32-minute mark off a score provided by Adrienn Easton.

The lead would hold up until the Lady Knights pieced together a massive lead extension off a penalty kick with 11:36 remaining in the half, as Caitlin Crooker doubled the advantage in size upon her connection with the back of the Wellsville net.

The Lady Lions (3-4) would not leave that goal unresponsive, as they fired right back just over a minute later to carve the deficit down the middle off of a goal from Maeve Turner, as she buried her shot home off a pass from Raegan Vogel at the 10:09 mark.

It would be the only goal that the visitors in white and orange would muster across the final 50 minutes of gameplay, as Addison added one last goal for good measure at the midway mark from Khloe Snow to secure their victory for good.

The win in between the posts belonged to Skylar Hall, who made seven saves out of eight shots faced, for Addison. On the other side of the pitch, Lydia Kaye also made seven saves for the Lady Lions.

Wellsville is back home Wednesday night, hosting Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 7 p.m. contest.

Fillmore 1, Arkport-Canaseraga 0

ARKPORT — You know how the old saying goes: Better late than never.

Following an epic showdown between both boys teams to lead off doubleheader action at the Melody J. Harwood Soccer Complex in Arkport, it was the ladies turn to follow up with another dynamic battle of their own. Like the boys matchup, there was plenty of opportunity, plenty of chances to strike, but through the vast majority of time, there were no connections that worked their way into the net.

But late in the second half on a routine play to carry the ball into the offensive zone, the Lady Eagles were granted an absolutely prime opportunity to break the ice with the biggest crack possible — a penalty kick.

Morghyn Ross elected to take the kick and she did not hesitate a single second, as she knocked home what would serve as the game-winning goal for the Lady Eagles to break a game-long scoreless spell and turn it into a sixth consecutive victory to open their Class D title defense, edging their way past host Arkport-Canaseraga with a 1-0 shutout on Monday.

“Tonight was just one of those nights that not a lot was working clean. Arkport-Canaseraga worked their tails off all game, and so did we,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “Mattie McCumiskey was a bright spot for us on defense. Now, we just need to turn our hard work into smarter work. Monday nights are never easy and you can tell the quality of play was missing, but the effort was not. Tenlee (Miller) earned a PK taking the ball hard into the corner before getting tripped up, and Morghyn calmly hit it home hard.”

The game-winning moment for the Lady Eagles (6-0) came with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, when a routine play deep in the Arkport-Canaseraga zone saw a trip inside the penalty box against the Lady Wolves result in a clock stoppage for a penalty kick directly in front.

Ross would receive election for the kick, and without a shred of doubt, she would hit it home to give Fillmore the one-goal lead, ultimately for good.

The Lady Eagles and their lone goal came off nine shots against the Lady Wolves, as they narrowly outshot their opponent by a 9-8 count.

In goal, Grace Clark was credited with the team’s shutout win, making all eight stops she faced. On the opposite end of the pitch, Maddie Kellogg also made eight saves for the hosts.

Up next, Fillmore heads back home to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg for a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday.

Andover/Whitesville 5, Jasper-Troupsburg 0

ANDOVER — Five different goalscorers all had a hand in keeping the gas pedal pushed down to the floor for Andover/Whitesville on Monday, as they fought off the all-day soggy conditions on the pitch and delivered an electric 5-0 home shutout of the Lady Wildcats of Jasper-Troupsburg in Andover.

Out of their 16 total shots they would apply against Jasper-Troupsburg, five of them would find their way into the back of the net — two of them earning Andover/Whitesville (2-5) a 2-0 lead going into the break, with the scoring beginning with Stella Bledsoe near midway in the stanza, as she capitalized on a strong feed dished along by Brynna Gaylord.

With minimal time remaining, Leigha Phelps added to it with a strike of her own off a pass from Reece Winters.

The momentum continued into the second half when Andover/Whitesville scored three more times, as Makenna Vance, Naudia Pierson and Brynna Gaylord all had tallies of their own to chip in, further cementing the victory in the process.

Phelps and Bledsoe each had an assist on the team’s final two goals in the last 11 minutes of play.

In goal, Olivia Waters held down the fort and picked up the shutout victory, making stops to all six shots she would face from Jasper-Troupsburg. On the opposite end, Annabelle VanNorman made 11 saves for the visitors.

Andover/Whitesville is back into the swing of things on Wednesday, as they head over the hill to Whitesville to host Friendship/Scio in a 5 p.m. contest.

HOUGHTON — The defending Class B2 champions continued to carve their warpath at the Kerr-Pegula Field House at Houghton University on Monday.

With the rain falling outside, the Lady Lions of Wellsville took their talents indoors and delivered another massive sweep, taking down host Fillmore with a 5-0 victory to finish off their season series with the Lady Eagles.

Bidzerkowny led the pack at first singles with a strong 6-0, 6-3 win over Fillmore’s Claire Schilke, with Miles following up with a near second singles shutout of Molly Mahoney, scoring a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Cawley rounded off with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Indigo Knapp at third singles.
