Fifth grade students plant a Japanese Maple with Mayor Shayler
From the Wellsville Tree Board,
Wellsville celebrated its 33rd year as being recognized as an official Tree City USA Friday, under the auspices of the National Arbor Day Foundation, with the annual tree planting ceremony, at the Wellsville Elementary School.
Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler read an official proclamation designating the day in front of the Wellsville fifth-graders, their teachers, Rachel Gunzburger, Stephanie Viglietta, Heather Brubaker, and Dan Allen, parents and official attendees and the newly planted Japanese Maple tree.
Wellsville Tree Board president Susan Duke welcomed the students and introduced Wellsville Village Director of Public Works, Dean Arnold, and tree board members Stacey Cretekos, Oak Duke, Eva Thompson, and Wally Gardner. She also, announced the planting of four new Sycamore trees in Island Park in memoriam of Linda Pullman.
Abriella Brown was named as winner of the annual Wellsville Tree Board poster contest. Her entry is framed and will hang in the Wellsville Village offices for one year.
The fifth-graders read poems after an introduction by Pacy Howe, including; “The Season of Trees” by Camden Foster and Bentley Crittenden, “The Wisdom of the Oak” by Grace Petrinec and William Day, “Plant a Tree Make a Friend”, by Brian Leda and Stephon Brown, “The Tall Guardians of the Earth” by Lexi Goerner and Ellie Joyce, and “Trees Trees Trees!” By Pacey Howe, William Day, Stephon Brown, Lexi Goerner, Brian Leda, Austin Green, Ellie Joyce.
Greg Moller a forester with the New York State Department of Conservation also gave a presentation on trees to the students and attendees.
