Wellsville Central School Board Election: Three questions for candidate Jason Mattison

Tuesday May 21 is Election Day in Wellsville

By Andrew Harris

SUN: Would you be agreeable to merging with smaller school districts like Scio, Whitesville, and Andover ?  Why or why not?

MATTISON: Yes, I would be agreeable to merging and looking at other shared services across school systems.   Comprehending the financial and educational implications is crucial to ascertain the long-term benefits for our taxpayers, students, and staff. We must avoid short-term advantages that could lead to long-term negative impacts on the school districts and taxpayers.

SUN: Wellsville has low test scores compared to the rest of the region according to the latest state reports. There are infrastructure improvements needed in the schools and buildings and grounds (including athletics) and we have a lot of teaching openings. There is also a budget to be done. What are your priorities as a board member?

MATTISON: We need to come up with a comprehensive plan to maximize the educational impact on our students while addressing the changing socio economics of our area.  I am troubled by the departure of competent staff from our district. It’s imperative that we make our district one of the most desirable places for our staff to work and for students to learn. The declining test scores indicate deeper underlying problems. Many concerns raised recently pertain to the management of issues rather than the issues themselves. I plan to delve into these significant matters and explore how we can address them with utmost integrity. I am confident that we can reclaim our status as one of the top districts in the region.

SUN: How do you explain the historic number of candidates for a volunteer school board spot ?  What is the number one reason you gathered signatures and filed a petition

MATTISON: The growing frustration and eagerness for change among people is evident in the community, and it’s inspiring to see such widespread involvement. My campaign for the school board is centered on fostering transparency, collaboration, and accountability within our administration, among staff, and for our students.  If I am fortunate enough to serve as a board member, my goal is to maximize Wellsville’s educational, extra curricular and financial potential while pushing the limits set by the state.
