The Allegany County Schools Music Association (ACSMA) is PROUD to share that students from across the county participated in the 2023 ACSMA Solo Festival this past weekend, Feb 3 & 4, at Fillmore Central School. This is the first of three NYSSMA sanctioned Solo Festivals that our students may participate in this spring.  Each student prepares scales, a solo, and also sight reads during their adjudication process, for a NYSSMA certified judge.  These ratings are then used in the Fall of 2023 to apply for NYSSMA Zone 15 Area All-State Festivals, as well as NYSSMA Conference All-State – which is the highest level of achievement for a New York State public school student.

Besides Solo Festival there were also students who auditioned for three ACSMA Scholarships. This year’s recipients of the competitive scholarships are as follows:

Junior High Scholarship recipient:  Mara Heaney – an 8th grader at Fillmore Central School.  She played a NYSSMA Level IV French Horn Solo, “ Vocalise” by Rachmaninoff and was accompanied by Dawn Bennett.

Senior High Scholarship Recipient:  Jenna Heaney – an 11th grader at Fillmore Central School.  She sang a NYSSMA Level VI Vocal Solo, “Poor Wand’ring One”, Pirates of Penzance, by Sullivan and was accompanied by Janice Schilke.

Senior Going on In Music Scholarship:  Ashden Hyslip – a 12th  grader at Wellsville High School.  She sang a NYSSMA Level VI Vocal Solo, “Black Swan” by Menotti and was accompanied by JoAnn Brown.

All three of these scholarship recipients will perform their solos at one of the upcoming ACSMA All-County Festivals.  ACSMA All-County Festival 2 will be held at Houghton College with the concert on March 4th at 2pm.  ACSMA All-County Festival 3 will be held at Wellsville High School with the concert on March 18th at 2pm – PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS.  More info will be coming as we get nearer the dates.

This year’s All-County Apparel Design winner is Maggie McGraw, a 9th grader at Cuba-Rushford Central School.
