The Wellsville man who was stabbed and airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Wellsville told the Wellsville Sun he is in a lot of pain but listed in stable condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

On Christmas Eve around 4:30 a.m., Adam Morehouse, 20, was stabbed in the Wellsville Shopping Center parking lot near McDonalds and drove himself to Jones Memorial Hospital.

Around 7:15 a.m., he was airlifted by MercyFlight helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital in critical condition. After surgery and two days in the intensive care unit, he was transferred to a recovery room where he is in stable condition today.

This morning, Wellsville Village Police announced they charged Haley M. Button, 23 of Little Genesee with second-degree attempted murder, a Class A felony, first-degree assault, a Class B felony and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly stabbing Morehouse on Christmas Eve.

Button was arraigned in Wellsville Village Court in front of Justice Brad Thompson and sent to the Allegany County Jail on $50,000 cash bail, a $100,000 property bond or a $200,000 partially secured bond. Button will answer the charges on Jan. 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Morehouse said “I want to thank the Wellsville Police Department, New York State Police, Jones Memorial Hospital staff, MTS (Medical Transport Services), MercyFlight and Strong.”

He said he read about the arrest and that there is no plans yet for his discharge.

His mother, Kathy Morehouse, said, “Adam is receiving wonderful care at Strong. We thank them for their support, love and caring for our son and family during this difficult time.”

Kathy Morehouse said it was a tough holiday.

“Needless to say, this Christmas wasn’t our best, but we still have him so that’s all that matters,” she said. “Next year has to be better.”

On Christmas Eve, Wellsville Village Police went to the scene and were assisted by troopers but Button was not in the area. Police issued a warrant for her arrest. Button was detained by the Amity-based State Police after a traffic stop in Amity where Welllsville Police say she was a passenger in a vehicle.

Kathy Morehouse said the incident has been a long ordeal. She said Button was allegedly sitting in their driveway on Dec. 23 waiting for Adam Morehouse.

Since the incident, Kathy Morehouse said the community has been wonderful to the family.

“I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers,” she told the Wellsville Sun. “The outpouring of kindness from this community has been amazing.”

After the alleged incident, Morehouse wrote a public post on Facebook. The post had 270 likes and 318 supportive comments. She wrote, “As some of you may have heard our son Adam was serious hurt this morning. He was mercy flighted to Strong and rushed into surgery. He will be in ICU for the next few days and then moved to the floor. We are suffering as a family and appreciate your prayers and kind words. There is an investigation going on so please don’t ask for details. Adam’s wife Gabby had nothing to do with this so please respect her as she too is concerned with Adam’s recovery. I will update my post on Adam’s progress as we get information. I have faith and believe in prayer and know Adam will pull through this and make a full recovery. Have a Merry Christmas.”
