A case in Steuben County that made national headlines in 1993 is back again.
At age 13, Eric Smith of Savona, was found guilty of killing Derrick Robie, 4 in Steuben County.
According to WETM News, Smith has been granted parole at age 42 after being denied 10 times.
WETM Ch. 18 said, “According to the DOCCS, Smith appeared for the 11th time before the Board of Parole on October 5 and subsequently was granted an open date of November 17, 2021.”
During the incident, Smith was found guilty of second-degree murder for taking the child in the woods, strangling him, crushing his head and also sexually abusing the child, including using a gardening tool.
