Buffalo and Rochester NY Mayors Lose Primary Election

Share:

It seems big changes are coming to Western New York’s biggest cities after last nights Democratic primary election. In Buffalo, four term Mayor Byron Brown has been defeated by a socialist and new face in Buffalo politics, India Walton. Her Wikipedia profile:

India Walton

“Walton became a registered nurse and has worked in both hospitals and schools. As a member of Service Employees International Union, she served as a representative for Local 1199. Her work in the healthcare sector and labor activism led her to community organizing. Walton served as Lead Organizer of Open Buffalo and the founding executive director of the Fruit Belt Community Land Trust.[4] She was active in the George Floyd protests, and criticized mayor Byron Brown for his handling of the Buffalo police shoving incident.[5]

Malik Evans

In Rochester NY, the embattled Mayor Leslie Warren was handed a big loss by City Councilmember Malik Evans who took home 65% of the Democratic vote. We’ve reported before on Mayor Warren’s trouble both politically and with her husbands legal issues. Mr. Evans has been the cities Finance Committee Chairperson and the Democrat and Chronicle had this summary of Evans and his campaign:

“Evans brought name recognition from his years on the city school board. He stayed clear of attacks, largely did not engage Warren and hammered a message of transparency, trust and accountability. On policy, he and Warren had few differences.”
