Allegany County Vietnam Veteran Leroy Cole honored
From the Daughters of the American Revolution,
At the June 19, 2025, Catherine Schuyler Chapter NSDAR meeting, held at the American House in Angelica, NY, a Quilt of Valor was awarded to Leroy Cole from Scio. Mr. Cole, a US Marine Corps veteran, served in Vietnam for 11 months in the late 1960’s and was wounded twice while there.
According to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, “a Quilt of Valor is a quality, handmade quilt awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war, to honor their service. It is an expression of gratitude, saying, ‘thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation’.” A Quilt of Valor symbolizes honor for service, recognition of the cost of freedom, and a reminder of the support and care of others. For some veterans, a quilt is the first “thank you” they have received.
The Catherine Schuyler Chapter NSDAR has an active group of members and quilters working with Quilts of Valor within their chapter Service for Veterans Committee. This quilt was pieced and bound by Annette Brown, the label hand-embroidered by Joan Sinclair, pillowcase for storage made by Meredith Chilson, and the quilting done by volunteers from Material Rewards in Dansville.
