From Staff Reports,
For a decade, the top teams in Section V Class B softball have been Wellsville and Bath. The Lions squeaked by Bath in a few sectional final and crossover games on the way to five straight titles and a state championship.
Last season, it was Bath who won the overall class title and advanced to states when both teams took home the coveted Section V championship brick.
On Tuesday night, the Lions roared, with a 6-1 victory over Bath Haverling led by the hitting and pitching of junior Kennedy Perry.
Perry, a Boston University commit, struck out 15, tossing a complete game one-hitter and walked just one with battery mate, sophomore Hannah Bennett.
The game was closer than the score indicates. In the 5th, Perry gave Wellsville the lead with a 3-run home run. Perry finished 3-for-4 on the game.
The second game of a scheduled doubleheader was rained out at historic Tullar Field.
On the Haverling side, Gabby Shroyer had a strong game with nine strikeouts, six hits and issued four walks.
Wellsville senior Teagan Burke — no stranger to heroics against Bath — blasted a RBI double while Tayler Palmatier had a clutch 2-RBI double.
Haverling is now 7-4 and sitting in fourth in the tough Class B1 standings behind Wayland-Cohocton (15-0), Waterloo (11-2), and North Rose-Wolcott (7-3).
Coach Gia George’s Lions improved to 8-2 in the Class B2 standings, sitting at third place in seedings behind No. 1 Mynderse (12-0) and No. 2 Marion/Gananda (12-2).
Wellsville is at Addison tonight and then hosts Class A HFL on Friday at Tullar Field at 7 p.m. and then another huge showdown at Tullar Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Class AA Pittsford Mendon.
