Job losses, tax increases, and administration pay increases demand public attention

Opinion by Alycia Frost, Cuba NY

Parents and Cuba-Rushford community members:

I’m not sure how many of you are aware of the current C-R school budget proposal, but it includes cuts to 7 teachers and 3 teacher assistants, while also increasing the tax levy by 10%.

At the same time, our superintendent is receiving yet another substantial raise. Last year alone, the district’s superintendent and Lead District Principal received a combined increase of $51,300, despite the district being in a position which constitutes significant teacher cuts. Notably, our district is also one of the only in the area to maintain a third principal role, even as student enrollment continues to decline.

Over the past several years, we have lost more than 30 highly trained and qualified teachers. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the connection between these losses and the decisions being made at the administrative level.

I encourage community members to attend the public budget presentation on Tuesday, May 12, and to make their voices heard by voting on the budget on May 19th.
