Over 6000 are laid to rest in Woodlawn
From the Woodlawn Cemetery Association,
As treasured active members of our community, you understand the importance of honoring our history and preserving the places that hold our collective memories. One such place is the Woodlawn Cemetery, a landmark that has quietly watched over Wellsville’s families for generations.
Encompassing 36 acres, Woodlawn is the final resting place for thousands of early residents of Wellsville and is a testament to the lives, stories, and heritage that have shaped our village and America’s Armed Services. Its winding paths, stately trees, and historic monuments remind us not only of those who have come before, but also of our responsibility to maintain this jewel for future generations.
However, the upkeep of such a historic site relies on the generosity of the community. Routine maintenance, seasonal landscaping, tree trimming and replacement, and necessary improvements all require funds beyond what is charged for interment at Woodlawn. That is why we are reaching out to you today. We are seeking donations to fund two preservation projects that are beyond the skills of our volunteers and grounds crew.
The beautiful stone gates that invite visitors to Woodlawn require repair. Woodlawn’s beautiful fence and gates were designed by American Master Blacksmith Samuel Yellin of Philadelphia and donated by Mrs. Marion Bradley in 1913. The re-pointing of the beautiful stone gates requires skilled work that is beyond the scope of our volunteers and Woodlawn’s maintenance crew.
Woodlawn’s beautiful and numerous trees shade monuments to the over 6,000 people laid to rest here. The tree scape was designed and planted over 100 years ago. Preserving and removing the trees and trimming their high reaching branches is a very costly expense demanding professional services. Your contribution—no matter the size—will help ensure that Woodlawn remains a peaceful, beautiful place for remembrance, reflection, and connection to our shared past.
