Jones Memorial Hospital Neurologist presents “Women and Neurology”

From the Monday Club,

Dr. Carlos Sollero, Neurologist with U/R Jones Memorial Hospital, this week  presented an information filled program on Women and Neurology.   It is a abroad field including migraine headaches, neuropathy, memory issues, seizures,  and movement disorders such as Parkinsons.  His special focus was on  Multiple Sclerosis (MS),  and he described  what happens to  the brain and spinal cord due to effects of MS.  Triggers are not fully understood, but MS is an abnormal immunologic response.  Some 200 genes are associated with the disease.

Eighty percent of MS patients are diagnosed between age 16 and 45.  MS affects twice as many women as men.   National cost of MS care is $9.4 billion annually.

Fatigue is a most common symptom,  as well as numbness, problems with walking and balance, tremors, and cognition.  The disease may show some improvement, then relapse.  No real treatment was available until 1993, then some medicines became available.  Thirty  new treatments have been developed  in the last 30 years,  bringing Doctors  closer to preventing 90 percent of relapses, as well as shutting down progression early in the disease. New drug development is ongoing  around the world.  Dr. Sollero expressed excitement to see  this  and some hope in the future to repair  MS damage.  He said exercise  of any kind is a very important help for MS.

Seven Monday Club members will be attending the Allegany County Federated Women’s Club meeting with other Allegany County organizations this Saturday in Fillmore.   Next week, members will find out more about Genesee Valley Media from their next speaker, Nick Davis, owner of the company.
