On Wednesday, Sergeant Shawn P. Mahoney, Badge #158, called out-of-service for the last time as a full-time employee of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.

The 911 dispatchers at the Allegany County Emergency Services have a classy tradition when someone in law enforcement retires. The officer calls out of service and they are thanked over the air for years of service. The moments are emotional on audio or video.

However, no one was ready for his daughter. She jumped in the front seat of his car as her dad called himself out of service for the last time.

Sgt. Mahoney knew he had to keep his composure. He made the smart choice to wear dark sunglasses to hide his watered eyes. He tilted his head back trying to get his emotions in check then called to the dispatchers in Belmont.

She wiped tears back in the first seconds of the video, then for the entire 37-second clip, even the most stoic person was emotional watching the retirement unfold.

The video on the Allegany County Sheriff’s 63,700 views in less than 24 hours. A video on @23johnanderson on Instagram and Facebook has over 200,000 views and now is being shared by media accounts with over 1 million followers.

Allegany County Sheriff Scott Cicirello shared the video with us. The clip had the following text:

Sergeant Mahoney started his career as a Part-time Corrections Officer on April 13, 2000, and became a Full-time Deputy Sheriff on May 8, 2002. Shawn became the Sergeant in charge of our Civil Division on June 6, 2011, where he has spent the past 14 years serving the citizens of Allegany County.

We look forward to seeing “Mo”, as he is affectionately known, in the near future, as he continues his career as a Part-time Deputy Sheriff working our Marine Patrol on Cuba and Rushford Lakes.

Best Wishes, Sergeant Mahoney. We have it from here.
