PITTSFORD — The Mendon Pool and Racquet club served as the end of the road for the Lady Lions of Wellsville and their three-peat on the tennis court on Monday, as Class B1 champion Honeoye Falls-Lima rolled out the red carpet for a trip to the Far West Regional tennis match this upcoming weekend, holding Wellsville at bay to capture a 5-0 victory to end their season.

“We lost to a very strong Honeoye Falls-Lima team. Before we got off the bus tonight, I told my team that all good things must unfortunately come to an end, but at the same time I told them to be very proud of what you accomplished this year,” Lady Lions coach Bill Stives said. “We won another Class B2 Championship, which was a goal we set right from the start of this season. Hanna (Miles) and Caitlin (Bittel) won a Doubles title, and we had Samantha (Bidzerkowny) and Peyton (Cawley) go to the State Qualifiers.

Stives added on his players, noting “Sarah (Mattison) and McKenna (Wonderling) had a great Sectional run for Doubles this year. We had a lot of depth and everyone was able to contribute to this awesome season. Shayla Cowan, Jaiden Edwards, Delilah Dimpfl, Madigan Murphy and Lexi Brownell all had victories across the doubles matches to help our 16-2 record this year.”

Honeoye Falls-Lima claimed two singles and three doubles victories to power up their trip beyond the Qualifier distinction, as Samantha Bidzerkowny fought tough against the Lady Cougars in what was her very last match for the black and orange, but ultimately fell in a 6-2, 6-2 decision for the Lady Lions. At second singles, Hanna Miles was downed in a 6-1, 6-1 decision to end her illustrious career with the Lady Lions.

In the doubles department, the second doubles team of Peyton Cawley and McKenna Wonderling nearly overcame a first-set loss to Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Mady Etter and Paige Moscicki, but were ultimately defeated in a 6-2, 6-4 decision at second doubles. In the third doubles match, Wellsville’s duo of Shayla Cowan and Jaiden Edwards were defeated, 6-1, 6-1.

Wellsville’s first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Sarah Mattison withdrew from their match, resulting in a victory for the Lady Cougars.

To go with their three-peat Section V championships, the Lady Lions officially put a wrap on a 2024 campaign that witnessed them finish at 16-2 overall. The team will graduate their five senior leaders at the end of the school year, in Bidzerkowny, Miles, Bittel, Wonderling and Cowan.

“We had three players get their 50th career win this year. This all started in the off-season with ladder matches, tennis camps and just playing tennis all throughout the summer. The team really wanted to get another title this year and put in the work to get one. I can’t say enough good things about this team, and I am very fortunate to be the one that coaches these talented athletes.” Stives said.
