Young landlubbers took to the high seas at this years’ David A. Howe Library Pirate Party!
From the David A. Howe Library,
Nearly fifty children attended this year’s Pirate Party where they were able to sink each other’s battleship, walk the plank, and dig for treasure. Through funding from the Friends of the Library, the children’s department was able to put together this evening of activities for young marauders.
Children donned eye patches, headbands and created their own paper hats to look like a fearsome buccaneer. Once dressed the part, children had the opportunity to walk a handcrafted plank created by the library’s own handyman. Treasure was buried in the children’s room, where shovel shaped spoons were distributed to break open their fossils and take the pirate coins home. And in the gallery was assembled a life sized battleship game! Wetted foam balls were launched over free standing pegboards in order to sink their friend’s battleship, filling the space with uproarious laughter.

The parents seemed to enjoy the party almost as much as the kids. One parent said: “My son is always so excited for the events at the library. The pirate party was so much fun for him! He loved the treasure you got to “dig up”. He especially loved the creative way they set up battleship! It was one of his favorite parts. Being able to “walk the plank” was a great touch!” Another parent added: “Phenomenal time! My son and I enjoyed every aspect of the Pirate Party! We look forward to all of the festivities that Kate and staff put together year round!”
