The horse was finally caught with help from village mechanic

A runaway horse decided to play a round at the Wellsville Country Club today.

The horse got away from his owner and took off across the green, green grass of the Wellsville Country Club.

A horse, running through a golf course doesn’t seem like a big deal until you consider the value of the tees and greens of a quality course.

Story continues after video:

In order to create the perfect layers of bent or blue grasses a golf tee, or especially the greens, are constructed with careful layers of turf, sod, sand, and gravel. The turf component has to be grown specifically to allow for a very fine mowing, sometimes down to one-eighth of an inch. Tees are constructed in a similar way, to create an optimal place to start each hole.

Club management noted that the horse escaped down the “old runway” and then onto the golf course.

“They tried to wrangle the horse for a few hours today and in the process several tees and greens were significantly damaged. The horse was finally caught near the Village of Wellsville wastewater treatment plant. Here is a satellite image of the approximate route the horse took through the links:

The horse chase started near the old runway and ended at near the blue circle above(approximate route)

Club management reports that no golfers were injured during the horse chase. Village Department of Public Works mechanic Josh Brown was instrumental in the safe capture of the horse.

Repairs to the course will begin right away.
