On the heels of this Wednesday night meeting of the biennial Allegany County Republican Committee(ACRC,) longtime party chair, District 2 legislator Mike Healy, has officially quit the post and won’t be seeking another two year term. Today the ACRC released this statement:

The Allegany County Republican Committee reports that longtime Party Chairman, Dwight “Mike” Healy, has announced that he will step down and will not seek, or accept, re-election to that position again at the upcoming Committee’s Biennial Organization Meeting.  The meeting will be held at 6:00 pm, Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the American Legion Post 808, 29 Schuyler Street, Belmont, NY 14813.

That statement from the ACRC comes after Healy sent a long letter to all members of the county committee. In the letter he speaks to his record of leadership,

“My job has been to be Dad for everyone and keep the train on the tracks. If success is a measure, then we have been successful as a Party.” – Dwight “Mike” Healy

Healy’s full letter:

The meeting on Wednesday evening will usher in a new county Republican party committee, new chairman, vice chairs, and other party leadership positions. District 1 Legislator and current Vice-Chairman of the Allegany County Legislature Kevin “Fred” Demick has already indicted his candidacy for the party boss position. According to all sources Demick has wide support and no known opposition for the role without Healy in the contest.

An uncontested bid for party chairman would simply require a resolution, a second, and a voice vote to seat a new chairman. Should a unannounced candidate ask for a committee vote between two candidates, it would occur via secret weighted ballot.

District committees will also hold mini caucuses to appoint leaders that will need full committee approval to become official party leaders.

A full accounting of the meeting will be published later this week.
