Learn more about Joy Hutchinson and her Ford family
By Andrew Harris, pictured is Joy with her nephew Gage Geffers
You may recognize this longtime member of the Texas Hot team, popular for her friendly smile and speedy service. Did you know that when she isn’t serving at Wellsville’s iconic diner, Joy and her family are getting into a Ford Powerstroke truck. She has been part of a family of mechanics, mud bog drivers, truck pullers, and motorsport fans her entire life
We asked Joy a few questions about her side gig and don’t forget you can watch her pull this Friday July 19 at the Allegany County Fair!! The Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pull starts at 6:30 at the Grandstand.
Can you tell me more about how you got into this sport?
Joy: My brothers and one nephew have been pulling their pick-up trucks for probably 7 or 8 years. Before that, they had lifted mud trucks and would travel as far as Ohio and into central Pennsylvania competing in Mud Bogs. I’ve been their biggest fan through the truck pulling and went to almost every event. My nephew that pulls, he and I are super close, so he bought an extra truck and decided I should be pulling along with them!
Give us some numbers on your pulls, wins, and accomlishments …
Last year was my first year competing. My first pull was at the Cattaraugus County Fair in Little Valley. A full pull is 300 ft. I pulled 273 ft. Was the best 13 seconds ever!!!
Tell us about the vehicles you and the family drive ?
There are five of us that pull Ford Power Strokes. It’s worth noting that we are a huge Ford family with the exception of one brother that likes Toyotas. Growing up, I couldn’t even date a guy if he didn’t drive a Ford! Lol !
How did you get into this sport ?
Our love of “power sports” if you will, comes from my dad.
I’m the oldest of 10 kids. 8 of us were all raised under one roof. My mom and dad both worked. There wasn’t much money left for fancy vacations or things like that. So, fast cars and powerful trucks became our thing. I was in the garage with my dad alot growing up. Being the oldest, I was his boy until the others were old enough to help him. I am kind of a tomboy. I like to look pretty but not afraid to get dirty and I absolutely love the feel of hauling ass down the track !
Sadly, dad had a motorcycle accident in May of 1999 and had a traumatic brain injury. He had to leave his long time job as a welder at the ABB-Air Pre heater. Coming and watching us pull is one of his favorite things to do. He’s very proud of all of us.
Tell us more about your family “crew”
It’s a family thing. My brothers are known as The Geffers Boys. When you see one there’s 4 more behind him.
No fancy trucks. Just our every day drivers. We don’t compete to win. We do it for fun. Without those boys, I wouldn’t be able to do this. They are my biggest fans too. đź’™
When will you be pulling in Angelica if people want to come cheer you on ?
My brothers: Larry Jr, Barry, Brandon, Lance, my nephew Gage and myself will all be pulling Friday night at the Angelica Fair. Pull starts at 630 at the main Grandstand area! Hope to see you there!!
