The department of Public Works has a new job opening
By Andrew Harris
The mayor and village board members held public hearings prior to a regular monthly meeting to lay the groundwork for a fight against blight.
What’s blight ?
In the municipal context blight can be defined as residential and commercial properties which are either uninhabitable and condemned or past the point of rehabilitation. These properties are dangerous, reduce the quality of life for neighbors, and reduce the value of all nearby properties.
We asked Mayor Randy Shayler about the new village law and what that means for future enforcement efforts:
“This updates our building code and inspection laws to create a specific process for dealing with blight. Our previous law needed to be stregthened for our code enforcement officers to be successful in holding blighted property owners accountable.”
Shayler explained that with the addition of veteran code enforcement officer Jo Fenske to the ranks, expect enforcement efforts to become more common and with results.
