Camp Merz, Mayville, NY Saturday January 20, 2024,

On a windy, snowy cold Saturday last, 14 Troops from the Alleghany Highlands Council descended on Camp Merz to compete in the Klondike Derby. Named for the Klondike Gold Rush, it is a winter competition amongst boy scouts to test there winter skills.

The troops Competed in 6 events. Fire Building, First Aid, An obstacle course, Orienteering (finding your way with a compass,) Pioneering ( Building Necessary items from things you gather from the area and lashing them together) And a good old fashioned sled race! With the added hurdle that they had to prepare and cook their own lunch outside.

By 3:30 in the afternoon, the competition had come to an end the results were shared with the Troops awaiting some warmth.

Troop 689 hailing from Hinsdale  came in Third

Troop 557 From Shinglehouse, Pa Was second

Troop 736 From Angelica was first place in the overall event and won the pioneering event.
