Morrison Hayes Post 702 sent 4 boys; Elijah Brophy, Ben Jordan (both Wellsville Central), Holden Matteson (Whitesville Central) and Tyler Nickerson (Scio Central).
American Legion Boys’ State is a week-long program that immerses high school youth (currently completing their junior year) in citizenship and leadership training. They learn the practical aspects of government as it exists in New York State, and come to recognize that the individual is integral to the character and success of government. They also participate in physical fitness, team work and other activities under the guidance of American Legion counselors and U.S. Marines. Boys’ State took place at Morrisville State College from June 25 through June 30, 2023. Attending from Allegany County were 11 boys, the highest county number in the state.
The purpose of Girls State is to provide to high school Juniors across the State the opportunity to create and govern a 51st mythical state. Girls are chosen by the Units after interviewing the candidates. Consideration is given to scholastic achievements, leadership, character, honesty and physical fitness. They learn the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship in this week-long, hands-on workshop in government. Girls State took place at SUNY Brockport, Brockport, NY from July 2 through July 8, 2023.
Representing Morrison Hayes Unit 702 American Legion Auxiliary were junior members, Makaila Brewster (Andover Central) and Kori Thomas (Bolivar-Richburg Central).
Boys and girls were presented with certificates at a pizza and wing dinner held at Morrison Hayes Post 702 Wellsville American Legion on July 12th, 2023.
