The Canisteo-Greenwood girls’ flag football team made history last season in Section V when the team played in the first-ever sanctioned game and season.
This year, it was added by the state as a sport eligible for sectionals and states. On Saturday, Canisteo-Greenwood made history once again, capturing the first-ever Section V title with a 20-0 win over Batavia at Monroe Community College.
That was for the Class B title.
On Sunday, Canisteo-Greenwood then shutout Penfield, the Class A champion, 18-0.
The team will play Monday night at Highmark Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills against the overall Section VI champions from Clarence.

“The Little Red Engine keeps rolling!” said Canisteo-Greenwood coach James Freeland, who is assisted by Collin Button. “There are no words for how proud we are and how happy we are for these ladies.”
Canisteo-Greenwood is 10-1 on the season and the win over Batavia avenged their only loss on the season, a 9-6 loss to Batavia. They have shut out six teams, and most impressive, the last two were in championship games.
Canisteo-Greenwood junior quarterback Lillian Mullen threw three touchdown passes.
Mullen helped spread the ball around in the title game and Freeland, a long-time successful high school and college coach, used some razzle-dazzle as well.
With Batavia keying on Mullen’s running, Freeland called for a play that looked like a designed sweep, but turned into a pass play to freshman Bailey Mullen for a 27-yard TD.
In the title game, also threw a 35-yard touchdown to senior Kylie Williamson and a 10-yard score.
