Kathryn Ward Chatham Curl, 78, died on May 11, 2023 after 4 nights in the cardiac intensive care unit at Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC. Kathryn was born on November 13, 1944 in Greenville, SC to Hayne Chatham and Sallie Ward.

She graduated from Wade-Hampton High School in Greenville, SC in 1962. She earned degrees from Queens College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Pittsburgh. She taught high school English in South and North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New York State.  After twenty-two years at Alfred-Almond Central School in New York, she retired and began a short career in Teacher Education at Alfred University.

After moving to Asheville in 2007, she taught English part time at the local community college and at South College, a regional proprietary college. Also in her retirement, Kathryn devoted time to political and community organizations. She was also involved in community outreach programs such as All Souls Cathedral’s “A Room at the Inn,” a shelter for at-risk women and was an on-air reader for the blind. In her downtime, she always enjoyed reading classic literature and a good crossword puzzle. Her life was devoted to the education and enrichment of others, the betterment of society, and the wellbeing of her family.

She is survived by her husband, Jim; sons, David and Jason (Rebecca); grandchildren Adrienne, Alex, and Allison; and cousins, Bob Alexander and Chere Allard.

Services will be determined at a later date, and in leu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made in her name to the charity of your choosing.
