A 72-year old man died in the Leicester tragedy

Michael T. Baldwin Reports:

Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty advises of a fatal bulldozer accident that occurred Saturday afternoon in the Town of Leicester.

On November 26th, 2022 at approximately 5:50 pm, Sheriff’s Deputies and emergency personnel responded to Dunkley Road in the Town of Leicester for the report of a male run over by a bulldozer.

Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on scene and learned that the male, identified as 72 year-old Thomas E. Swyers of Perry NY, had gone to the property earlier in the day and was using the bulldozer to clear a portion of a wooded area. When Swyers failed to return home after dark, family members requested assistance from friends to check his welfare. Swyers was located deceased in the woods at that time.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Swyers was either working on the bulldozer or fell off while it was in gear and was drug under the tracks.

Fire Departments from Leicester, Cuylerville and Mount Morris assisted at the scene. Livingston County EMS also assisted at the scene along with the Livingston County Coroner’s Office.

Handling the on scene operations and investigations for the Sheriff’s Office were members of the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division and the Forensic Identification Unit.

The incident remains under investigation by our Office, however the incident is believed to be a tragic accident.
