The Allegany County Legislature will vote on several important resolutions

Read the agenda and resolutions before the board

By Andrew Harris

The diligent Clerk of the Board, Brenda Rigby Riehle, just send this updated agenda and details on the resolutions for the September 14 meeting of the Allegany County Legislature.

Of special interest is a changing of the guard at the county Probation Department. Long-time director Robert Starks is retiring after serving the county for three decades. Veteran probation officer Scott Grantier is set to take over that department.

Legislator Debra Root is bringing a resolution to the board to vote on a major change in county economic development operations. The resolution will vote to create a new county department, the Office of Economic Development. The department actually isn’t completely new: Allegany county once had an economic development office which was shifted to operating within a contract with Alfred State College. Current economic development head, Dr. Craig Clark, is the expected leader of the new office and will be charged with finding a permanent director for the office.

The board will vote on a resolution officially opposing the new gun control laws in New York State. The essence of this symbolic gesture can be summarized in one sentence from the resolution:

“Allegany County Board of Legislators considers this law to be an unconstitutional infringement upon our Second Amendment right for law-abiding citizens to bear arms, and an overt infringement upon freedom and liberty in New York State”

Last but not least, County Administrator Carissa Knapp will introduce the new county Deputy Administrator Mallory LaForge Short. Mallory is a well known Wellsville High School graduate and about as nice of a lady as you will find. Her personality, education, and experience are going to be great assets to Allegany County. Mrs. Short starts the job August 25.
