The Alfred State College (ASC) men’s swimming & diving team recently completed the regular season with an undefeated dual meet record. The Pioneers were 7-0 and become the first Alfred State team to finish with a perfect regular season during the NCAA era (2014-present).

The team won their dual meets by an average of 161 to 57. They defeated both Penn State Behrend and Nazareth for the first time. The victory over Behrend snapped the Lions 16-year dual meet winning streak. Behrend and Nazareth both won conference championships in 2020, the last year swimming and diving held conference championships.

Twelve of 19 school records have been broken thus far during the regular season. Kellen Fletcher (Wrightstown, NJ) broke the AMCC record in the 100 fly (50.61). He becomes the first Pioneer to own an AMCC swimming record (men or women) and is the only student athlete from somewhere other than Penn State Behrend on the list.

On the national scene, Alfred State earned a top 50 team ranking for the first time during the fall semester (ranked 47th). Currently, all five relay teams are ranked in top 50 in NCAA Division III. The 400-medley relay team is currently ranked the highest (34th).

Head Coach Mike Smiechowski has been impressed with the hard work and dedication of the team. “This has been an historic season for our men. They have been resilient through some tough challenges. Having an undefeated regular season is a great reward for the efforts of this team. The success is also a reflection of the hard work put in by past Pioneers built us into the program we are today. It’s a great day to be a Pioneer!”

The team is busy preparing to add to their success in the postseason. The postseason begins at the AMCC/Empire 8 Championships in the middle of February (Feb. 16 – 19 at the Webster Aquatic Center).
