The State Health Department is reporting a fatality as of yesterday involving a county resident at a hospital or other venue outside the county which isn’t nursing home-related.

The death continues the county’s high fatality rate per population in the state, being 17th statewide and ninth in Upstate New York, north of Orange and Dutchess counties. Its population is 52nd out of 62.

The jump has occurred since August 22, after no deaths were reported for nearly three months, back to June 3.

It is the fourth fatality this month as the number of new positives have surged from mid-August as the fast-spreading Delta virus sweeps the nation. Deaths are a lagging indicator, generally increasing from two to four weeks after surges in new cases.

The Allegany County Department of Health is posting 16 new positives today, as of noon, with 12 yesterday which, based on a partial Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request response we received this afternoon, included three cases from Monday.

There has been no response to a data request for last Wednesday through yesterday, except for yesterday’s partial information.
