Directions in Independent Living is seeking visual artwork portraying the joy and exuberance of athletic ability by artists with disabilities for an art competition which runs through June 14. Artists with disabilities of any kind and any age are encouraged to submit artwork depicting athletic ability despite a disability.

The winning work will be used in promotional materials for a virtual Run/Walk/Ride event on Monday, July 26, marking the historic passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, 1990.

Entries in the art competition will be accepted through June 14. Winners will be announced on June 21. For an entry form and more information about the art competition, please see Directions’ website at www.oleanilc.org or call (716) 378-9438.  Artwork can be emailed to victoriakearns@oleanilc.org or dropped off at Directions’ offices at 2626 W. State St., Suite 202, in the Holiday Park Center, Olean, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon.- Fri.

The Tri-County Arts Council will partner with Directions in Independent Living in adjudicating the art entries.  While only one design will be selected for use on event materials including tee shirts, all entries are valued and will be exhibited in the front window of the Tri-County Arts Council Clay Studio at 110 W. State St., Olean,

The art competition and Run/Walk/Ride honors the civil and social freedoms people with disabilities won due to the passage of the ADA 31 years ago.  Freedom of expression in both the arts and athletics are emblematic of this historic legislation.

The virtual Run/Walk/Ride will invite individuals from throughout the Southern Tier and beyond to participate virtually on Facebook with photos and videos of their participation in the event.

Art Competition for 3.1 mile run / walk / ride

Directions in Independent Living is seeking visual artwork portraying the freedom of running, walking or riding by artists with disabilities for an art competition which runs through June 11.

Since the upcoming virtual Run/Walk/Ride on July 26th will invite participants to walk, run, ride a bike or wheelchair, or push a stroller with children, artists with disabilities of any kind and any age are encouraged to enter artwork depicting any of those activities despite a disability.

The winning artwork will be used in promotional materials for the virtual Run/Walk/Ride event which kicks off on Monday, July 26, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 1.  The date is “National Disability Independence Day” marking the historic passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26th, 1990 – 31 years ago which is why we chose 3.1 miles for the event. The winning artwork will be featured on all promotional materials, on a T-shirt, on Facebook, and in local newspapers. All entries will be exhibited either in Tri-County Arts Council’s window at 110 W. State St. or in Directions’ front windows at 512 W. State St., Olean.

Entries may be emailed to victoriakearns@oleanilc.org or dropped off at Directions’ Holiday Park location, 2626 W. State St., Suite 202, Olean.  Please include a copy of the entry form with your art submission.  For information, please call (716) 378-9438.
