Wellsville Lion’s Club officials made the unpleasant announcement yesterday that The Greater Wellsville Trout Derby has been cancelled for 2021. Typically anglers flock to Wellsville for a chance to fish for money, with some trout worth over $1000 !
Event organizers made this difficult decision for a few reasons. Of course the pandemic was a main consideration as the guidance from the state advises against large gatherings of any kind.
Actually purchasing the fish for the event was another issue. In 2020 the Lion’s Club had already purchased and stocked hundreds of fish prior to cancellation. With the deadline to start stocking the river near, the decision to cancel the purchase was made.
