Aaron Gies Issues Statement Following Election

From Aaron Gies for Congress,

Olean, NY — Aaron Gies, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 23rd Congressional District, released the following statement on the results of Tuesday’s general election:

“To every volunteer who knocked on a door after a long day at work, made calls on a Saturday afternoon, or put up a yard sign when it would have been easier not to: thank you. You built this campaign from the ground up.”

“To the voters of the Southern Tier and Western New York who put their trust in this campaign: thank you. We came up short, but we showed a real grassroots movement across the district. We posted double-digit gains in nearly every county. That didn’t happen by accident. It happened because families here are tired of doing everything right and falling further and further behind.

“We ran on a simple idea: a good life should be affordable for everyone. That means health care you can actually afford and rural hospitals that stay open. It means housing young families can buy, free school meals for every child, and rural schools that get the funding they deserve. It means fair prices for family farms and wages that let working people live a dignified life. None of that went away last night.”

“I wish Congressman Langworthy success in every good work in his new term. I am hopeful that he will take the nations’s overwhelming rejection of Trumpism and his own narrower margin of victory as an occasion for reflection. After seventeen months, over two hundred fifty events and tens of thousands of miles, I am looking forward to a little time off. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished. I would do it all again.”

Gies teaches theology and Franciscan studies at St. Bonaventure University. He won the Democratic nomination in June with more than 70 percent of the vote. New York’s 23rd District includes all of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung and Tioga counties and parts of Erie, Schuyler and Steuben counties.
