Abram D. Carter, 59, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Born and raised in Canisteo, New York, Abe was known as a strong, hardworking man with a big heart. He was someone people could count on when something needed fixing or when a helping hand was needed
Abe had a natural talent for working with his hands. He could take apart and repair just about anything, from snowmobiles and dirt bikes to four-wheelers and cars. It was a skill that earned him a lot of respect. He was also known for his skill behind the wheel. Abe didn’t just drive, he mastered it. Friends and family will remember the stories, the races, and the way he could outdrive just about anyone, even when the odds weren’t in his favor.
To his nieces and nephews, he was the fun uncle, the one who could step up to a kickball game and send the ball flying to the next block, leaving everyone laughing and a little in awe.
Since 2010, Abe worked as a commercial diver with Aquacleaners, a job that reflected both his toughness and dedication. During that time, his crew was even on an episode of the television show Dirty Jobs, a moment that spoke to the kind of hard work he did every day.
Abe faced struggles in his life, and while those challenges were not always easy, they never defined the whole of who he was. At his core, he was someone who meant well, and those who knew him best understood his heart.
He will be remembered for his strength, his skills, and the many ways he showed up for others.
Private services and burial will be held for the family. Abe will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.
Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
