Wiser’s Wramblings- It’s Still a Deer Dear- All Over Again

Many decades ago in the early 80’s shortly after I began my college teaching career at Alfred State College, I had a 1976 (or so) Datsun pickup truck. One early evening headed back to Scio via The Vandermark Road (Cty. Rte 10) coming out of a sharp bend I struck a deer which was crossing the road, hitting it completely broadside. The deer continued on its way but I pulled over to assess the damage. As I looked at the front of the truck expecting broken headlights or worse, I stared in amazement at the front end of the truck but hardly noticed any damage. Upon closer inspection I could see that the slightly pointed center front of the hood was curled under a little, but it was hardly even noticeable. Sighing in relief I continued on my journey homeward.

Fast forwarding until this past Tuesday I had a similar experience, albeit a little closer to home. I had been asked to take my son to a Dr. Appointment in Belmont so I was traveling the Back River Road, or even more aptly now named the Back Wriver Wroad WRaceway to pick him up. More on the Wraceway travails in a bit. As I was headed north I had the unfortunate incident of meeting up with an east bound deer crossing from the woodlands adjacent to the road, across to the Genesee River, where they consumed their daily H₂O intake. Yep! You guessed it. I hit the deer, fortunately at a sedate speed, filly broadside, and then running over the deer as it passed beneath the wheels of the car. I planned to stop back on my way home to see what, if anything needed to be done. After picking my son up,  and delivering him to the Dr. office I got out to inspect the damage done to the car. Just like in the 80’s there was very little noticeable damage done to the car. A couple of “plastic chrome pieces” were cracked and a lower front cowling was broken but beyond that very little damage had occurred. I will get an estimate today to see if any immediate repairs are “necessary” or affordable. Having checked with Schenk and Miles, my insurance agency, I have a minimal amount of “deductible” coverage so I can probably handle that “out of pocket.” The plastic common to automobile body parts manufacturing these days isn’t bendable.

Now “back” to the Wriver Wroad Wraceway.

Road construction apparently going on across the river on Rte. 19 seems to have caused a traffic Wre-Direction over to our road. The 80 MPH normal traffic on our road hasn’t slowed any but the flow of traffic sometimes nearly “bumper to bumper,” has increased significantly.

A driveway re-paving project in the hands of W. Allison and Sons has been underway at our residence and has been a little inconvenienced by the increased flow of traffic on our road, but they have handled it well. I have a driveway that slopes away from the main road, so it has to be “cambered” a little off to the side to eliminate water flow directly into our garage.

Every year, as I “fortunately” get older and older, our swimming pool summer commissioning gets a little more daunting. We have a “solar heating” arrangement that requires laying two 30” wide strips of multi-tube “blanket” on a frame that I constructed. Water inlet and outlet hoses need to be connected as well. If you’ve ever used 2” diameter plastic tubing and fitting components to make a source and outlet connection you will understand the difficulties encountered in making about 10 “leak free” connections. I suppose a one-time new construction is relatively a “pain free” endeavor but, re-using the components year after year isn’t quite as straight forward. All is now assembled. It’s nearly, completely leak free with just a couple of very slow dripping leaks that I can live with. I have been in the pool 3 times during this process.

The first time in, the water temperature was 59⁰. Last check upon final completion was 62⁰. I will recheck again as it has been in the sun for two days now and should have warmed somewhat more. The chilly nights this time of year keep the pool temperature from holding all of its heat. I do have a solar blanket available but it’s a nuisance putting on and taking off so I don’t bother. The nearly 90⁰ temperature yesterday should have helped some.

I don’t have complete Genesee Valley Chorus 50th Year Anniversary planning details available yet but do plan on sharing that information in a special “separate,” non-Wrambling announcement as soon as I have the complete information. That announcement, and invitation for former members to join us, will follow shortly. Another reminder is that the concert will be held June 14th with a dress rehearsal on the 13th.

Stay tuned!
