The quest for another Section V title started off with a good win for the Hornell girls on Tuesday night with a Hornell 65-37 win over Midlakes.

“I thought our girls gave consistent effort on the defensive end tonight, and that allowed us to control the game early while we settled into our offense. Our activity, communication, and discipline defensively really set the tone,” said Hornell coach Jim Dagon. “Once our shots started falling, we were able to extend the lead and create separation. From there, we did a good job maintaining focus, continuing to defend, and playing the right way for four quarters.”

Jordyn Dyring led No. 3 Hornell (16-5) with 21 points while Selena Maldonado had 12 points.

Mia Nasca and Raegan Evingham each had nine points, A’Jonay Hawkins six, Teegan Eveland four, Paula Ranin three and Alivia Ryder had one also scored for Hornell.

No. 6 Midlakes finishes at 9-13.

Hornell plays No. 2 Waterloo (16-5) in the Class B1 semifinals on Friday.

“Overall, it was a strong team win,” Dagon added. “Our defensive consistency and ability to stay connected were the difference.”
