The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the implementation of the “Handle With Care” program, an initiative designed to promote safer, more informed interactions between first responders and individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, cognitive impairments, medical conditions, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations within our community.

The “Handle With Care” program allows families and caregivers to voluntarily provide important information to the Sheriff’s Office about a loved one who may have autism, a developmental disability, cognitive impairment, medical condition, age-related challenges, or other special needs. This information may include communication preferences, sensory sensitivities, behavioral triggers, medical concerns, mobility limitations, and emergency contact details.

The information is securely maintained and can be accessed during emergency calls or law enforcement interactions. When responding to an address or encountering a registered individual, first responders are alerted to “Handle With Care,” prompting them to adjust their approach to better meet that individual’s specific needs.

Importantly, this information can be accessed not only by Sheriff’s Deputies, but also by the New York State Police, local law enforcement, and other first responders when answering calls for service. This coordinated approach helps ensure consistency, awareness, and safety across all responding agencies.

“Our goal is to ensure every member of our community is treated with understanding, dignity, and respect,” said Sheriff Cicirello. “This program helps first responders approach situations more effectively and compassionately when interacting with individuals who may communicate, behave, or respond differently in stressful situations.”

Individuals with autism or developmental challenges, elderly residents, and others within vulnerable populations may have difficulty with verbal communication, following commands, maintaining eye contact, processing instructions, or responding quickly during emergencies. By equipping first responders with advance knowledge and training, the program enhances safety for both residents and emergency personnel.

Participation in the “Handle With Care” program is completely voluntary and confidential. Families who enroll may update information at any time to ensure records remain current.

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office encourages families, caregivers, and guardians to consider registering loved ones who may benefit from this program. The registration link can be found directly on the Sheriff’s Office website ( www.alleganycountysheriff-ny.gov/ ) and through the Sheriff’s Office mobile app for convenient access also available on our website.
