Belmont NY: 7pm meeting time is open to the public to attend of comment on the record

By Andrew Harris, read the full budget here

The 2026 budget for Allegany County has recieved much more discussion than the typical county budget. This can only be explained by the recent debate over the new local law which allows the budget to exceed the 2% tax cap, if necessary.

The public hearing for that local law was held last and was well attended despite an outcry over the timing of the meeting intended to hear from the public. It was held at 2pm on a Wednesday, when many are working.

County Chairman W. Brooke Harris noted that this meeting is at 7pm, in Belmont NY at the legislative chambers. The public is encouraged to attend and address the county on the record. Typically each speaker is provided three minutes and that will also be live streamed on the county’s YouTube channel.

When you comment during a public hearing, your remarks become part of the public record. In contrast to when you comment on social media, that could be anyone and can be controlled by automated computer applications / data collection programs.
