Collmer: My View from the Press Box sees exciting soccer sectionals Monday and Tuesday and football sectionals

The Sectional Semifinals are here in both boys and girls Soccer, with Champions being crowned this Friday and Saturday at various locations.  While the first Round of Football Sectionals are also getting underway.  

In football, Wellsville returned to 11-man football and had a very successful season. The team

BOYS SOCCER 

CLASS D2 

Tuesday October 28th  

No.1 Avoca-Prattsburgh  vs. No.4 Mount Morris  at Perry 5:30 p.m

No.2 Lyndonville  vs. No.3 Andover-Whitesville  at Perry 7:30 p.m. 

Championship game  Friday October 31st. TBD

CLASS D1

Tuesday October 28th 

No.1 Northstar Christian  vs No. 4 C.G Finney  at Greece Olympia 

No.2 Fillmore  vs No. 3 Genesee-Valley/Belfast  at Houghton College 

Both contests are rematches from the regular season. Northstar defeated C.G Finney 1-0 on September 27th. Finney won the Rematch 1-0 on October 6th. 

Fillmore handed Genesee-Valley/Belfast their only loss 1-0 on September 24th. Genesee-Valley/Belfast won the rematch 1-0 on October 4th handing Fillmore their only loss on the season. 

Senior Isaiah Sisson leads Fillmore with 28 Goals and 4 assists. 

CLASS B

Wednesday October 29th

No 1 Hornell  vs No. 5 Livonia  at Dansville 5:30 p.m.

No. 2 Mynderse  No. 3 Leroy/Cal-Mum  at Dansville 7:30 p.m. 

Hornell won both regular season contests versus Livonia 1-0 in very intense battles. The Bulldogs are looking to send Future Hall of Fame Coach Ray Maxwell out in style.  Maxwell is retiring at the end of the season and his players would like nothing more to send him into retirement with another Sectional championship. Hornell is looking for their 3rd consecutive Sectional championship. Hornell Senior Wyatt Evingham has scored 23 goals and passed out 14 assists.  

Mynderse is led by Junior Elijah Doell who leads all of Section Five with 34 Goals and 6 assists. Doell has accounted for 77% of his teams goals.  Doell led Mynderse with 19 goals and 11 assists his freshman season but didn’t play his sophomore year to focus on Club Soccer.  

Playing in the LCAA Division one Leroy/Cal-Mum has played a tough schedule and should be able to go toe-to-toe with Mynderse.  If the Rivals are able to get past Mynderse a familiar opponent will be waiting in the Championship game.  They Lost both games to Hornell 2-0 and 3-0. But Defeated Livonia 6-1 and 5-2. 

The Championship game will be Saturday November 1st at 6 p.m. at Honeoye Falls-Lima. 

Girls Soccer 

CLASS D 

Wednesday October 29th 

No. 1 Fillmore  vs No. 4 Avoca-Prattsburgh  at Wellsville Elementary School 

No. 2 CG Finney  vs. No. 3 Northstar Christian Academy  at Webster Schroeder 

Championship game Saturday November 1st. at a site to be determined. 

CLASS C2

Tuesday October 28th

No. 1 Kendall  vs, No. 4 Keshequa  at Cal-Mum 5:30 p.m. 

No. 2 Byron-Bergen  vs No. 3 Bloomfield  at Cal-Mum at 7:45 p.m. 

CLASS C1

No. 1 Geneseo  vs No. 5 Holley  at Avon 7 p.m. 

No. 2 Campbell-Savona/Hammondsport  vs No. 3 Canisteo-Greenwood  at Bath 6:30 p.m. 

Campbell-Savona/Hammondsport won their only regular season contest 2-1 over C-G on September 15th.  They were the No.1 Seed in the Steuben County League tournament however lost in the Semifinal to Addison. Canisteo-Greenwood defeated Addison 1-0 in the Championship game to capture the League Tournament Championship.  

CLASS B 

Tuesday October 28th 

No.1 Penn Yan vs No. 4 Bath  at Dansville 5:30 p.m. 

No. 2 Livonia  vs No. 3 Hornell  at Dansville 7:45 p.m. 

Penn Yan Defeated Bath 2-1 on October 6th. 

Livonia defeated Hornell 2-1 on September 22nd and 4-3 in overtime on October 7th. Hornell won all of their other games this season.  

The Championship game will be Friday night October 31st at a location that will be determined depending on the match up. 

FOOTBALL SECTIONALS 

No. 3 Canisteo-Greenwood will host No. 6 Oakfield-Alabama/Elba at Canisteo-Greenwood Elementary Friday October 31st at 7 p.m. in the first Round of Class D Sectionals. 

No. 5 Wellsville/Genesee-Valley/Belfast (4-4) will visit No. 4 Leroy/Cal-Mum (5-3) at Noon on Saturday November 1st at Caledonia-Mumford High school. 

The two teams met two weeks ago on Wellsville’s homecoming. The Lions were trying to score the go-ahead touchdown late int he game when LeRoy/Cal-Mum was able to stop the Lions and drop two touchdowns to seal the win.

Last week, the short-handed Lions dropped to No. 1 Alexander/Pembroke, 25-0, their fourth shutout to cap off a 7-0 regular season and the No. 1 seed.

Alexander/Pembroke Defenders will host No. 8 seed Livonia.

No. 6 Hornell/Arkport-Canaseraga will visit No. 3 East-Rochester/Gananda at 7 p.m. Friday October 31st. Hornell beat LeRoy/Cal-Mum this season and E-R/Gananda beat Wellsville, who lost to LeRoy/Cal-Mum.

BASKETBALL 

Basketball Season is right around the corner. With Alfred-Almond not fielding a varsity boys team this winter a couple of teams are looking for games.

Avoca-Prattsburgh is looking for Non-League games this upcoming season.  Please contact A-P Athletic director Michele Wright if interested in playing the Titans. mwright1@avocacsd.org

A-P returns all Five Starters from last season. 

Canisteo-Greenwood is looking for Non-League boys games for this upcoming season. Please contact Athletic Director Ethan Brooks if interested in scheduling the Chargers this season ebrooks@cgcsd.org

C-G returns four Starters from last season including Steuben County League MVP  Carson Chaffee.  

SAVE THE DATE

The 6th Annual Hall of Fame Basketball Showcase will be held Saturday December 6th at Wayland-Cohocton high school. Five games, Four boys and one girls. $5 admission, ticket is good for all day. All Proceeds benefit the Wayland-Cohocton Athletic Hall of Fame.  This years Showcase will be dedicated to long time Steuben County Referee and Basketball fan Floyd Farley. Farley passed away unexpectedly in July of 2020.

Corning,  York,  Honeoye and the Elba girls are all defending Sectional Champions. Corning Sophomore Nolyn Proudfoot,  Honeoye Junior Landon Washburn, and Canisteo-Greenwood Seniors Carson Chaffee and Bailey Mullen have all Surpassed 1,000 career points.
