From the NYS DEC,

DEC has confirmed Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in a wild deer harvested in the Town of Sparta, Livingston County. DEC is implementing its CWD Response Plan to assess the extent of the disease and take steps to limit its spread.

Hunters in the containment area, which includes the towns of Conesus, Groveland, North Dansville, Sparta, Springwater, and West Sparta, must submit tissue samples from their harvested deer to DEC. Hunters may not transport whole deer outside the containment area. Details on sample collection locations will be made available on DEC’s CWD webpage (link below)

CWD is a highly contagious and an always fatal disease that affects the brain and nervous system of deer, moose, and elk. There is no evidence that CWD can be contracted by humans or domestic livestock, but the Center for Disease Control recommends not eating venison from any deer known to have CWD. DEC will host a virtual informational session on November 17 at 7:00 PM to discuss CWD and potential management and containment actions.
