The Wellsville Lions and the great 3-1 start to the 2025 football season looked like it was coming back to earth on Friday night in Bath.

On homecoming in Bath for the Haverling Rams, the blue and white alumni no doubt reminded them of the dominance the team has had over the years in Bath … Bath simply did not lose at home. From the tradition of Saturday afternoon games to the now-popular Friday Night Lights in Steuben County.

The Rams jumped out to a 13-0 lead and held a 27-21 lead late in the fourth quarter.

However, for all of the adjustments Bath made to counter the Lions, Wellsville had one left in the playbook and scored to win, 28-27.

The game had many story lines, and Wellsville coach Tim Keenan pointed out, “The critical factor was senior Trenton Green made all four of his extra points and that was the difference in a one-point win.”

Coming off Section V offensive Player of the Week honors, Wellsville senior quarterback Brennen Geffers faced new looks and threw two first-half interceptions, one returned for a touchdown as Bath took a 13-0 lead.

Keenan said what happened next surprised him.

“Brennen is a quiet leader, so I did not know how he would react. However, after throwing the second interception, he hustled and made the tackle, so we kept him in there even though he usually does not play defense,” Kennan said. “He showed positive emotion and he had some huge tackles and got everyone up. He did whatever we asked to win the game. He took command even in a game where he wasn’t playing his best.”

Bath’s offense started driving and looked ready to put the game away in the first half. But Jack Davis tipped a pass and Xander Outman never stopped running and put himself in position to catch the tip for an interception and returned it 15 yards.

Geffers then hit Davis and David Clark on passes, but Bath shut down the passing game and allowed decent runs by Outman and Matt Ritter, but they were unable to break free to score.

Just when Bath shut down all the Wellsville weapons, a new one appeared. Freshman David Lamberson caught his first career touchdown pass from Geffers to cut the lead to 13-7 in the second quarter.

Freshman David Lamberson had a huge touchdown catch for Wellsville.

With time winding down before halftime, Clark hauled in another long pass then Geffers scored on a five-yard run for a 14-13 halftime lead.

Bath took a 20-13 lead in the third, then Geffers ran in a four-yard touchdown for a 21-20 Wellsville lead to set up the exciting fourth quarter.

After Bath pulled ahead again, 27-20, Keenan was letting his senior quarterback take over and the offensive line loved the run calls, especially Cole Densmore who stated leading the charge. On the first play of the winning 51-yard drive, Geffers ran for 20 yards, then Outman and Ritter ran for first downs before the Lions went back to the air to Green and Lamberson.

As time was winding down, Geffers ran the final 20 yards on three plays for a touchdown and Green’s final extra point gave the Lions a 28-27 lead.

Bath turned the ball over but with enough time to get the ball back. However, Geffers ran twice, the second for a first down and one kneel down later, the game was over.

“It was a team effort, we weren’t playing well, but the defense stepped up for us,” said Keenan.

Outman led Wellsvill with 11 tackles, four solo and two for a loss while Wyatt Green, Trenton Green, Matt Ritter (two for a loss) and Damon Davis all had five tackles.

Uriah Tocher, Jack Cicirello, Davis, Geffers and Riley Rogers al had tackles.

The Wellsville coach was also impressed with Bath and the game plan by Haverling coach Mark Recktenwald.

“I don’t know what happened to them last week (a 58-0 loss to #1 Alexander/Pembroke) but this is a good team and not the team we saw on tap,” Kennan said. “They are well-coached, they had a great game-plan against us and they made tremendous adjustments at halftime.

“I told Coach Recktenwald after the game, even if we lost, that was my favorite game of the year,” Keenan added.

Wellsville (4-1) is now ranked #4 in Section V Class C and hosts #3 LeRoy/Cal-Mum (3-2) on Friday night for homecoming in Wellsville.
