Wellsville boys and girls JV soccer teams also win

COHOCTON — The Wellsville girls’ soccer team won a thriller in overtime on Thursday night, 1-0 over a tough Alfred-Almond squad in the first round of the Wayland-Cohocton Tournament.

In the first overtime with 8:50 left, Alya Faulkner scored on a long pass from Emily Stuck for the game winner.

Lydia Kaye got the shutout with three saves to lead the Lions to the championship game.

Josie Turner had 14 saves in goal for Alfred-Almond.

Wellsville’s next home game is Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. vs Canisteo-Greenwood.

Girls Volleyball

Wellsville 3, Scio-Friendship 0

Wellsville opened the season with a 3-0 win over Scio Friendship. The scores were 25-12, 25-14 and 25-10.

Senior Brynn Hallock had six aces, nine serving points, three assists and two kills while junior Kylie Phelps had seven aces and a kill.

The other three seniors had big nights as well. Teagan Burke had eight aces and two kills while Willow Everett had six digs and three aces. Mia Wyant had five serving points, three aces and seven assists.

Junior Hannah Bennett had three aces and two kills while junior Hailey Cowburn had four aces and a kill and junior Lexis Coleman had two digs and an ace.

Juniors Hannah Richardson and Joscelyn Howard had kills and Olivia Morris had a dig. Freshman Alexa Dunbar had two digs and an ace.

For Scio-Friendship, Ryleigh Wenslow served for five points and had an ace. 

The Lions, a Class C1 team, are at Class B Livonia tonight (Friday) and play in the Campbell-Savona Tournament on Saturday.

The Lions home opener is Sept. 9 with the JV team at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m. against Genesee Valley-Belfast.

JV SPORTS

The Wellsville JV girls soccer team beat Marcus Whitman, 3-0 on Thursday night.

The Wellsville JV boys soccer team won on the road in Portville, 1-0.
