There’s a new Reiki practitioner in town! Compassionate Healing Arts is a new small business offering Reiki services across the county! But wait, what even is Reiki and why should anyone be excited? I’m so glad you asked!

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is an alternative healing method originating from Japan. It involves universal energy (Rei) and personal energy (Ki), and practitioners are attuned, or trained, to detect and direct these energy flows.

Now I know that I said “energy” a number of times, but stay with me. Medical researchers at Johns Hopkins, Yale, and The Cleveland Clinic have shown that Reiki provides measurable benefits when used alongside traditional medical care. The science behind Reiki shows that it triggers our parasympathetic response. Instead of “Fight or Flight”, it’s “Rest and Digest.” It’s a nervous system response that allows our body’s natural healing and recovery systems to engage.

I could go on about the science behind Reiki and the different research studies, but I want to reel it in a bit and get to what I really wanted to tell you.

My wife, Amber Schuson, is the owner of Compassionate Healing Arts, an energy healing studio offering Reiki sessions, as well as workshops teaching Acupressure and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique, also referred to as tapping).

Jeez, there I go throwing out more “alternative” practices. Don’t worry, acupressure is similar to acupuncture, just without the needles! And tapping, well, that uses pressure points to help calm and regulate… I’m doing it again.

At Compassionate Healing Arts, education is a huge focus, and we just can’t help but talk about it! In addition to her degree in Human Services from Alfred, over the past 20 years Amber has studied herbalism and natural remedies with Demetria Clark, acupressure with Dr. Michael Reed Gach, and is now set to be a certified Reiki Master this June. Amber wants to use her accumulated knowledge to educate and empower anyone seeking natural ways to boost their health and healing.

Amber goes about this by using clear language, and has a more grounded approach to energy healing. Similar to yoga in the 80s and 90s, there is a mystical stigma surrounding Reiki. Yet like yoga, the benefits of Reiki require no belief system, no religion, no beseeching of spirits for it to work. At Compassionate Healing Arts, we love having honest conversations about exactly what we’re doing and why.

Amber also does Reiki to help pets. Like humans, Reiki can help pets who are dealing with the effects of time, like stiff joints and lack of energy. Reiki also helps with behavioral issues and anxiety. In addition to doing pet Reiki for her clients, Amber has been volunteering at the Allegany SPCA, giving Reiki to cats and dogs who need it most.

I appreciate you reading this far, and I promise I won’t keep you much longer. So before you go, Amber has a great workshop coming up! Acupressure for Headaches & Migraines! It’s Sunday, May 17th at 4 p.m., hosted by the wonderful Kristin Buchholz at Heron Hill Yoga in Wellsville. This will be a very hands-on, interactive workshop. Space is limited so Amber can provide meaningful attention to participants. As someone who has frequent migraines, believe me, these pressure points really help.

If you’ve been curious but hesitant, this workshop is the perfect low-stakes way to find out what it’s all about. You can book your spot at the workshop, and learn more about our services, at www.compassionatehealingarts.com.
