At the April 16, 2026, meeting of the Catherine Schuyler Chapter NSDAR, held at the Cuba Baptist Church in Cuba, NY, in addition to the regular business, three new members were welcomed, and two Quilts of Valor were awarded.

A Quilt of Valor (QOV) must be quilted, not tied, which means hand or machine quilting. It is awarded, not just passed out like magazines or videos. A QOV says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice’” in serving our nation in combat. Since the program’s inception in 2003, over 382,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded here in the United States and Germany, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Presented a quilt hand pieced and bound by one of the chapter members and quilted by a Quilt of Valor volunteer were Kay Klein from Angelica and Bob Barber from Belfast. Both served during the Vietnam era: Mrs. Klein with the US Air Force in a military hospital in the Philippines, and Mr. Barber with the US Army stationed in South Vietnam.

Margaret Secor, Chair of the Chapter Committee, spoke at the QOV presentation ceremony, saying “This quilt brings you a three-part message from our hearts. First, we thank you for your service. We thank you for leaving all you held dear to serve, whether in time of crisis or in time of peace. Next, our quilters know that freedom is not free. The cost of our freedom is the dedication of lives of men and women like you, and this quilt is meant to say, ‘Thank you for your sacrifice.’ Finally, this quilt is meant to offer comfort to you, and to remind you that although your family and friends cannot always be with you, you are forever in all our thoughts and our hearts. Thank you and welcome home.”
