On Saturday, February 14th, James E. Gallman, 81, a life-long resident of Angelica, moved on to his eternal resting place. Born on October 8, 1944, Jim was the son of the late Roland Gallmann and Grace Deming Gallmann. Jim lived a life full of time with his family and dedication to his local community.
Jim graduated from Angelica Central School with the Class of 1962 and continued his education at Alfred State College graduating in 1964. He also served in the National Guard, earning the distinction of 1st Lieutenant. He spoke often of his service during the Flood of 1972.
Jim was a dedicated employee for both SKF in Hornell and Dresser-Rand in Wellsville throughout his career in engineering. He helped out at the family business, Angelica Enterprises, Inc. after he retired.
In the area of community service, few others are as involved as Jim was throughout his life. He was an active fireman with the Angelica Hose Co. for 60+ years, frequently handling its finances as treasurer, and holding various roles from Assistant Fire Chief to Fire Police, and a past member of the Angelica Rescue Squad. He was an Allegany County Legislator for many years and spent time as the Republican County Election Commissioner. Through the years, Jim acted as Angelica Town Supervisor and as an Angelica Village Board Trustee. He was also a past president of the Angelica Lions Club.
Jim was considered an expert on the rules of the local sport of Roque (croquet) and won several tournaments at Angelica’s Heritage Days. After he retired from playing, he still spent many summer evenings enjoying the sport as a spectator in the park. He also made many friends through playing cards. Euchre was one of his favorite hobbies, along with sharing his knowledge of local history (including time spent on Angelica Community Radio), and driving around the roads of Allegany County.
There is nothing Jim was prouder of than his family. Jim was an avid supporter of his children and grandchildren at their various events. If you knew Jim, you knew all about his children and grandchildren. He was also the family “carrier of dog bones” who always gave treats to the family pets. Facebook became Jim’s public diary and if you were his friend, you knew what was going on.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Theresa McKendrick Gallman, whom he married on November 20, 1970; his daughters, Melissa (Jason) Agard, Tracy (Brian) Jones, and Sarah (Chris) St.George; his son, Timothy (Michelle) Gallman; his grandchildren, Harley (Andy) Mertens, Tyler Castronova, Parker (Paula) Jones, Olivia Adams, Madison Jones, Kyle Burrows, Hunter Jones, Dylan Burrows, Austin Pond, Ethan Gallman, and Briella St.George; his great-grandchildren, Cooper and Elliana Jones; his brother, Dean (Kymn) Gallmann; his sister, Barbara Gallman Wahl; his sisters-in-law, Mary Conlin, Susan (Michael) Snowden, and Sharon Gallman; his brother-in-law, Thomas McKendrick; a lot of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Roland and Grace; his daughter, Stephanie Gallman; an infant sister, Marlene Sue Gallmann; his brother, Robert “Bobby” Gallman; his mother-in-law, Mary Alice Kohler; his father-in-law, Edward McKendrick; his aunt, Rowena Stallings; his sister-in-law, Priscilla “Peggy” Atwood; his brothers-in-law, Peter McKendrick, Richard Wahl, and David Atwood; his niece, Jacqueline Starck; his nephews, Jason Snowden and Richard Atwood.
