Jones Memorial Hospital recently celebrated newly constructed spaces on December 18 with a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting event. The construction project was partially funded by a large legacy gift left by Franklin & Barbara Boekell, long-time supporters of Jones Memorial. The family donated $625,000 to advance quality healthcare in the community. Their gift was immediately put to use in the approximately $2 million dollar medical suite project, which included oncology, infusion, general surgery and an expanded sleep lab. These renovations are designed to provide patients with more convenient access to comprehensive, high-quality care.

“We are grateful for families and supporters, like the Boekell family, who value quality healthcare in our rural communities,”stated Jim Helms, CEO of Jones Memorial Hospital. “This legacy gift shows the care and commitment of not just our Jones family, but of our community, to the Jones mission. We are grateful for the trust that is placed in us and commit to being good stewards of these investments in community healthcare.” The family was recognized for their donation with a large plaque in the medical suite which has been named for the Boekell family.

Philanthropy is an important component to the framework of a successful community hospital and has been a part of the Jones Memorial Hospital legacy from its founding, with the donation of the mansion and property belonging to William and Gertrude F. Jones to be used as the hospital.
Jim Helms explained the importance of community support, stating, “Small community hospitals, like JMH, often operate on tight budgets. We rely on reimbursements from insurance and government programs that often do not cover the full cost of care, especially for uninsured or underinsured patients. Philanthropic support helps to bridge the funding gap and ensures that the hospital can maintain essential services, in addition to providing additional funding for capital projects.”
As Jones Memorial continues to grow to meet the evolving needs of the region, philanthropic support remains vital in ensuring that exceptional, compassionate care is available close to home. Gifts like the Boekell family’s legacy not only enhance facilities and services today, but also invest in the future health of generations to come. Through partnership with donors, families, and community supporters, Jones Memorial can continue strengthening access to advanced care, right here in our rural communities.
