Dear Diary,
It’s been a while, tonight I watched one of the best girls basketball games I’ve seen in a long time.
Undefeated Canisteo-Greenwood (5-0) visited Undefeated Fillmore (3-0). A back and forth intense game needed overtime to be decided with Canisteo-Greenwood winning 63-57 in Overtime.
The two teams are similar in some ways but different in others.

Both have senior leaders with Canisteo-Greenwood boasting Seniors Bailey Mullen and Payton Bentley who were both All-State players last season in Class B while Fillmore Senior Mattie McCumsky was All-State Honorable Mention in Class D last season.
Both have younger girls who can score in bunches. Fillmore has leading Scorer Emalyn Mucher who was 4th team All-State last season as an 8th grader. She’s averaging over 20 points per game this season and scored 25 points tonight with 13 coming in the 3rd quarter.
This is the full game from the Mullen Entertainment Network:
Canisteo-Greenwood has 8th grader Kara Mahany who was All-State Honorable Mention last season as a 7th grader and is currently the Chargers leading Scorer and three point shooter.
However tonight Mahany wasn’t shooting well (2-for-12 from 3) so the Mullen sisters took over and led the Chargers to victory.
The Senior leader Bailey scored 14 points and went 12-for-15 from the free throw line. Her younger sister Mackenna Mullen a Freshman scored 15 points, scoring 11 points in the 4th quarter and overtime with three key 3-pointers down the stretch.
The big difference between the Lady Chargers and Lady Eagles was depth. Fillmore only has Seven players on their Roster while the Chargers have ten and all play and contribute.

In tonight’s game eight players scored for Canisteo-Greenwood with four finishing in double figures. Four players scored for Fillmore with three reaching double figures.
As a team Canisteo-Greenwood has connected 48 times from downtown. They hit eleven 3-pointers in a win over Corning, ten versus Elba and nine tonight versus Fillmore.
For the season, Canisteo-Greenwood is led by:
8th grader Kara Mahany 17.3 PPG 21-3’s
Senior Bailey Mullen 7.5 PPG 2-3’s
Freshman Gracen Mahany 6.3 PPG 9-3’s
Freshman Mackenna Mullen 6.1 PPG 7-3’s
Freshman Anna Mitchell 5.6 PPG 5-3’s
Senior Payton Bentley 5.6 PPG 1-3
Freshman Paris May 4.8 PPG 3-3’s.
Unfortunately these two teams aren’t scheduled to play again this season but if they each win their sectional bracket they could play in the Class C State qualifier.
Over on the boys side:
It was quite a week for the Canisteo-Greenwood boys and senior Carson Chaffee.
Chaffee is averaging 27.0 PPG and 12.0 RPG. He has scored 1,219 points in his career and Tuesday night he passed Hunter McCaffery as the schools All-time leading Scorer.
While Chaffee’s high school career will come to an end at the end of the season he has a teammate whose career is just beginning.
Coach Brandon Beers might have raised a few eyebrows in the Canisteo Valley when he brought his son Jack Beers up to varsity as an 8th grader.
However Jack has proven he belongs and quieted any potential critics. In his varsity debut versus Hornell the younger Beers scored 11 points off the bench and showed that he can really twinkle the twine from the outside knocking down three 3-pointers. He scored 13 points versus State Ranked Geneseo and led the team with 17 points in the championship game of the Dansville Tip-Off Tournament defeating Wayland-Cohocton.
He has scored in double figures in four of their first six games and is averaging 10.6 points per game for the 5-1 Chargers.
Coach Beers made the right decision because Jack couldn’t have a better role model and mentor than Chaffee, and at the end of the season Chaffee will pass the torch to Jack and hand him the keys to the car.
While we’re only three weeks into the season a lot has already happened and I can’t wait to see what will happen next.
Good Night Diary,
Bill
