BELMONT — Brody Vance scored 27 points — one night after dropping 39 — as Andover-Whitesville won the Belmont ROtary Tournament with a thrilling 80-73 overtime win over Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Vance, Colton Calladine and Vinny Joyce made clutch free throws and baskets in the second half. In overtime, James Miller-Young (8 points) was 2-for 2 from the line while Calladine (20 points) made 8-of-9 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Joyce had 16 points and was 3-for-4 in overtime. Meanwhile, Vance did not have to score in overtime and he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line in the game.

Jake Mattison had six points for A-W (2-0) while Trey Kent had three.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-1), Ian McKenzie had 26, Callahan Tallman had 11, Grant Preston and Landon Tilman each had 10, Kenton Schultz had nine and Cane Treusdell had seven. GV.B downed a tough Jasper-Troupsburg team, 60-51 in the first round.

Andover-Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce was at a loss for words and said it was a great weekend as A-W won the tournament for the second straight year.

Coach Joyce: “What a battle.  That took a lot out of players and coaches.  Couldn’t be more proud of the boys.  We took some heavy shots from GVB but never folded and delivered a few of our own.  I feel like our teams of the past may have packed it in when GVB took the lead in the second half.  That’s a testament to the overall makeup of this squad. That GVB team is no joke. Solid inside and out.  Coach Jason Hamer had them ready.  Free throws made a huge difference, we have struggled with that in the past but not today. Our Big 3 of Brody, Colt and Vinny came through especially late.  Brody and Colt with some clutch shots and Vinny with supreme effort on defense and rebounding as well as timely scoring. I didn’t think our defense was as good as yesterday but still came up with some timely stops and turnover’s. It was a great weekend for us and a great way to start the season. There is a long way to go, but I’m pleased early on. “

Andover-Whitesville 96, Arkport-Canaseraga, 28

In the opening game of the Belmont Rotary Tournament, Brody Vance was on fire, outscoring the entire other team with 39 points, with 15 in the first quarter and 26 in the first half!

Colton Calladine had 20 points and Jams Miller-Young had 11. Jake Mattison and Vincent Joyce each had seven, Carter Grice had six, Trey Kent had four while Gavin Frungillo had two.

For Arkport-Canaseraga, Luke Wilson had 10, Drew Wilson and Bryan Hess each had five, Joseph Santiago had three and Jace Carey and Quinton Owen each had two.

Andover-Whitesville Coach Jimmy Joyce said: “I’m extremely happy with how we came out flying.  Both defensively and offensively, we were really humming early. We have started slow in the past and with limited practice time with our starts running together, I was very pleased on how the boys performed.  A-C is extremely well coached and they are really dealing with a ton of injuries but we couldn’t take anything lightly.   I thought this was the most unselfish brand of basketball we have played in the 4 years I have been head coach.  Everyone got involved. It all starts with Brody and he  took charge early.  We will go as far as our big 3 of Brody, Colt and Vinny take us and tonight was a great first step.  We got contributions all across the board.  We will need an even better effort tomorrow vs Genesee Valley/Belfast.”

They got just that to win the tournament.
