The Section V tournament is always a time for upsets. With an open tournament, anything can happen. However, Cinderella’s slipper only lasts so long.

It’s not midnight yet for the Andover/Whitesville boys’ soccer team, as the #3 seed has advanced to the Section V Class D2 finals for the first time since the two schools combined in sports.

ANDOVER-WHITESVILLE

Andover-Whitesville entered the Section V tournament with a 10-7 record, but the losses were to tough Allegany County opponents, Fillmore, GV/B, C-R, and B-R. The 10 wins gave A/W the points needed for a #3 seed.

Coach Cody Borden’s team was ready for the postseason. The team ended the season with back-to-back losses to GV/B and B-R, but avenged a loss to Cuba-Rushford/Hinsdale.

In the first round, Andover-Whitesville downed #6 Lima Christian, 4-0 as junior Brody Vance and senior Isaiah Cole scored two goals and senior Colton Calladine had the assists.

In the semi-finals, Andover-Whitesville traveled to Perry on Wednesday night and defeated #2 Lyndonville (10-8), 1-0 as senior Skyler Orpet had his second straight shutout and fifth of the season.

Vance had a great game and finally was able to get the game-winning goal, sending A/W to the finals.

Andover/Whitesville (11-7) will face #1 Avoca-Prattsburgh (12-5-1) in the finals on Friday night at 5 p.m. in Perry. Hornell Sun Senior Sports Writer Bill Collmer will have an in-depth preview with photos ahead of the championship game.
